during limb lengthening involving external fixation,1 with an incidence as high as 85%.2 The most appropriate pin-site care is controversial; one study even justifies a nihilistic approach.3 Pin sites near joints are more prone to sepsis, as they are subject to greater movement.4 Minor inflammation or superficial infection is usually treated with antibiotics, local wound care, and occasionally pin removal. Osteomyelitis warrants surgical intervention.5 In this issue, Rahimnia et al.6 used antibioticcoated pins to prevent pin-tract infection in 4 out of 5 rabbits. However, the study sample was small. The results should be corroborated by those of larger randomised controlled studies to negate possible biases. It is uncertain how long antibiotic-coated pins are effective. Antibiotic-coated pins for prevention of pin-tract infection: a rabbit study.

PURPOSE. To evaluate the efficacy of antibiotic-coated pins for prevention of pin tract infection in a rabbit model. METHODS. 10 rabbits were divided into 2 groups. A unilateral external fixator was applied to the tibia with 4 self-taping 1.8-mm pins. In the test group, pins were coated with hydroxyapatite and antibiotic. In the control group, pins were not coated. All pins were then placed in ...

Prevention of pin tract infection with iodine-supported titanium pins.

BACKGROUND Pin tract infection is one of the most common complications of external fixation. We developed techniques to coat titanium implant surfaces with iodine. This study clinically evaluated the infection-preventive effects and biological safety of iodine-coated external fixation pins. PATIENTS AND METHODS Iodine-supported pins were placed in 39 limbs of 38 patients. The mean age of the ...

Hydroxyapatite-coated external-fixation pins. The effect on pin loosening and pin-track infection in leg lengthening for short stature.

Pin loosening and infection are inherent complications of external fixation. This study deals with their effects of using either hydroxyapatite (HA)-coated or uncoated external fixation pins in leg-lengthening procedures on patients of short stature. We used HA-coated pins on one side and uncoated pins on the other (randomly determined) in 28 bilateral lengthenings undertaken in 23 patients. A ...

The Half - Pin and the Pin Tract :

A lthough the key principles of external fixation have changed little over the years, there remains a significant amount of variation in fixation methods and postoperative care. In particular, use and management of halfpins intended for prolonged reconstruction are the subject of strong opinions and intense debate. Half-pins are commonly available in stainless steel and titanium. They are also ...

Clinical and histomorphometrical study on titanium dioxide-coated external fixation pins

BACKGROUND Pin site infection is the most common and significant complication of external fixation. In this work, the efficacy of pins coated with titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) for inhibition of infection was compared with that of stainless steel control pins in an in vivo study. METHODS Pins contaminated with an identifiable Staphylococcus aureus strain were inserted into femoral bone in a rat m...
